Yes, this is important! Naturopathic Doctors work with your family doctor and health care team to complete the circle of care and help you in areas that you need. Your Naturopathic Doctor will not advise against your family doctors recommendations and will work with them, and correspond to the degree you feel comfortable.
Yes, Naturopathic Doctors can provide education onNatural Ways to treat or support your health condition, they can help prevent nutrient deficiencies from the medications you are taking, and they can advise you when it might be good to speak to your family doctor if there are concerns about a medication. The goal of naturopathic medicine is to compliment your care, and give you the tools to optimize your health.
Unfortunately not, but most extended insurance companies provide coverage for Naturopathic Medicine [which includes all of Dr. Ashley’s services – naturopathic visits, acupuncture, skin treatments]. Some plans provide coverage for labs and supplements as well, but best to speak with your insurance plan first! We do offer direct billing to make the payment process easier as well.
Naturopathic Medicine, like family medicine, combines the art of practice and clinical experience with science and research to guide treatment options.
Naturopaths use evidence based medicine to guide their choices. Many treatments are well studied, however being a non-pharmaceutical industry, some things do not have the same level of science background yet. This can be discussed with your ND.
Many therapies Naturopaths use are highly effective and some can even bring quick and lasting relief, but many health concerns are related to what we do on a daily basis.
It can take time to learn how to support our bodies and our health, especially in our busy lives. It can also take time to learn how to look at our symptoms differently and to learn how to listen to our body instead of getting rid of symptoms because they’re inconvenient or annoying.
As naturopaths, our focus is on health – restoring health, bringing the body back into balance, and encouraging normal function. We treat the patient in front of us, not just their disease.
We look at the physical, mental-emotional, spiritual, social and environmental aspects of your health and work with you to come up with an individualized treatment plan that helps you achieve your health goals.
Naturopathic Doctors (ND's) have a minimum of seven or eight years of post-secondary training, including three to four years of undergraduate study followed by four years at a CNME (Council on Naturopathic Medical education) accredited NaturopathicCollege.
Naturopathic Doctors are trained in:
- Basic sciences such as anatomy, embryology, histology, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacology
- Clinical sciences such as laboratory diagnosis, physical and clinical diagnosis, radiology, minor surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, gynecology, geriatrics, environmental and public health, health promotion and disease prevention, basic counselling techniques, clinical nutrition and emergency medicine.
- Naturopathic treatment tools such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), homeopathy (use of dilute medicines), hydrotherapy (use of water of different temperatures to affect circulation and healing), and physical medicine (including basic massage techniques, Orthopaedic testing, manipulations similar to those a chiropractor might use, and therapeutic exercise).
- Dr.Ashley also has advanced training in IV nutrient therapy, prescribing rights for certain medications, skin care treatments [cosmetic acupuncture, peels, microdermabrasion], and cognitive behavioural therapy.
Acupuncture comes from thousands of years of traditional Chinese medicine which describes meridian systems throughout the body. Acupuncture points are chosen based on the desired action in the body [reducing pain, improving digestion, hormone balance etc].
Does acupuncture hurt?
The acupuncture needles are very fine and thin, smaller than a strand of hair and should not be painful! Some achiness however, can be normal.
Cosmetic acupuncture uses the same intake process as traditional acupuncture where your Naturopath will ask you questions about your health overall as well as your skin concerns, then apply points to face and body to help with concerns like anti-aging, collagen stimulation, botox alternative or complementary treatment to make injections last longer, it can help with fine lines, wrinkles, acne, rosacea and more!
The treatment includes skin cleansing, toning, acupuncture, and topicals following treatment.
